Operational Adaptation Project – Antofagasta Minerals – Los Vilos
In March 2021, the initial desalination plant, designed to produce 400 liters per second of desalinated water, began operations.
However, in July 2025, in the Coquimbo Region, the second phase of the project began, with the goal of doubling the plant’s capacity to 800 liters per second. We will expand the plant and optimize the water delivery system. Passive filters and duckbill valves will be installed, increasing the seawater intake capacity.
The outstanding work of our commercial divers, who tackle every underwater task with precision, experience, and commitment. Their work is essential to ensuring safety and efficiency at every stage of the project, demonstrating that excellence and dedication are the foundation of our success.
The PAO Project will enable more than 90% of the water used in copper production to come from the sea and recirculation processes, significantly reducing the use of freshwater.
This advancement reaffirms our commitment to innovation and the protection of natural resources, ensuring a more sustainable future for the mining industry.
