Mooring System for the Quebrada Blanca 2 (QB2) Marine Terminal

The project involved the installation of the mooring system at the QB2 mining site’s marine terminal for Teck, commissioned by the construction company Belfi and under the direction of Bechtel Corporation. It was carried out during the second half of 2023.

Work began with the hoisting and loading of containers at the Port of Iquique (Iquique’s Port Company), in accordance with the Rigging Plan, under which six containers were positioned on the deck of the Yagana vessel. Each weighing 236 tons and featured a design incorporating eight lifting points, In addition, their respective mooring systems (chains, mooring lines, and buoys) were loaded. The vessel was subsequently transported to the mooring points agreed upon by the Maritime Authority.

The final installation of the system posed significant challenges: the underwater work had to be performed at depths exceeding 30 meters, and the hoisting lines had to be disconnected using ROVs, among other tasks. The subsea maneuvers, a critical part of the operation, were carried out without incident and in a timeframe that exceeded our clients’ expectations.

This project stood out for its rigorous planning, high safety standards, and adherence to the committed timelines.

The vessel Yagana and the boat Oxxean Doce participated in this project.
